“Afghanistan and Women” brings together Dr. Massouda Jalal and her daughter, Hasina Jalal, for an in-depth conversation on the challenges and triumphs of advancing gender equality in Afghanistan. Joined by moderator Kunal Shankar, a former student of Global Thought at Columbia, they discuss the impact of Dr. Jalal’s groundbreaking work, strategies to support women’s rights, and the current state of affairs in the country.
Dr. Massouda Jalal made history as the first woman to run for President of Afghanistan, placing second in 2002, and sixth in the 2004 elections. She subsequently served in the first post-Taliban government that same year as the Minister of Women's Affairs A professor at the Kabul Medical University, Dr. Jalal has also held key roles at the World Food Programme and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Afghanistan. Renowned as a national icon, she has dedicated her life to advocating for women’s rights worldwide. In recognition of her efforts, she was awarded the UN Human Rights Global Prize in 2010.
