UK Parliament Calls for Release of Professor Faizullah Jalal

A motion signed by 16 Members of Parliament highlighted the arrest as part of the Taliban’s ongoing efforts to silence dissent. Human rights organisations, such as Amnesty International,Human Rights Watch, Scholars at Risk, members of the US House Foreign Affairs Committee, and multiple Afghan diplomatic missions still associated with the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan called for his liberation, noting that human rights defenders, women activists, journalists, and academics are among those most frequently targeted by the regime’s intimidation and harassment campaigns.

The motion calls on the UK Government to condemn the Taliban’s actions, actively support efforts to secure Professor Jalal’s release, and expand asylum and resettlement support for Afghan nationals seeking refuge in the UK.
